Album notes

The creation of this CD is part of a shared project with some American musicians, who participated to some musical meetings since 2002 held at the Hospice “Casa Madonna dell’Uliveto” at Montericco of Albinea, in the hills south of Reggio Emilia. During the concerts, the musicians involved have made a recording session of original arrangements, compound by them, inspired to the traditional music of the Italian Apennines. The pieces identified were made available from the Ethnomusicological Archive “Giorgio Vezzani - The storytellers” and these musicians, from different cultures, have approached this traditional music from beginners, curious and able to listen and understand the similarities between different musical worlds. They are Duck Baker, Bob Brozman, Woody Mann, Ed Gerhard, all refined interpreters of acoustic guitar, who, in the course of their careers have taken very different paths developing their own unique style and original composition and performance and Massimo Gatti, one of Europe’s best interpreters of the mandolin, that accompanied each musician for a duet. Duck attended the free jazz and Celtic music, Bob with his resonator, old time music and blues, the blues roots and contemporary jazz of Woody, Ed with his melodic research through experimental tunings and slide guitar and Massimo, who developed considerable technical style bluegrass as well as being a popular performer in classical ensembles. They were asked to listen to ancient and more recent melodies, typically played (although less and less frequently) at weddings or village fairs in the Apennines and to choose freely the pieces they found most inspiring. The result is an album of highly original acoustic guitar that contains free arrangements, in no way affected by philological intent.
Donna Lombarda was the only exception right from the very beginning.
As this song is symbolic in Italian folklore, they decided, as jazz players tend to do, to take this as their standard: a piece well enough known to be at once common ground and a means of comparison. Over the past five years, in the silence of a house on Reggio Emilia’s mountains, they have explored, listened and recorded the same tune many times over in order to achieve for each musician virtually identical technical and emotional recording conditions. The melodies on this record will remain for them a joyful reminder of the extraordinary experience it has been to have had the opportunity to create a bond between human and musical sensitivity, intense yet diverse, united not only by common enthusiasm and love of music, but also by a true sense of human solidarity. On March 20th, 21st and 22nd it has been presented in Italy the CD "Donna Lombarda" that contains Appennino Reggiano traditional songs performed by Woody Mann - Duck Baker - Bob Brozman - Ed Gerhard - Massimo Gatti and Luigi Maramotti. These appointments in Italy at the presence live of Woody Mann, Duck Baker and Massimo Gatti, took place in Milan at Feltrinelli and La Ratera and at Montericco of Albinea nearby Reggio Emilia at the Hospice “Casa Madonna dell’Uliveto”. Thanks to the generosity of the artists involved, the proceeds of this cd will go entirely to the Madonna dell'Uliveto Foundation, which maintains the Hospice.
